I have the pleasure of writing an article for a couple that has been such a blessing to all of us, Bradford & Brenda Shaw. Today will be their last day as part of this church family at Biddeford and they will be missed immensely. Their time with us though, has provided us with memories which will last a lifetime, bringing joy and encouragement throughout the years to come. Although we will miss them, others will be blessed by their presence as they serve the Lord in a new location.
Some friends are fun to be with. But a close friend can be even better than a brother.
Proverbs 18:24, ETRV
The bible has several stories that give us a glimpse into what deep friendships are like: 1st Samuel 18:3, “Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul” or the words that so intimately speak of Timothy in Philippians 2:22, “But you know his proven character, that as a son with his father he served with me in the gospel.” For many of us, the last several years have provided us with an opportunity to develop similar relationships with Brad and Brenda. Some may see them as a mom or dad figure they never had, or at the very least, a spiritual mom and dad that have played a significant role in their spiritual development. We have also had the chance to watch two amazing servants reveal to us that age, although it may slow us down, need not stop us from serving the Lord. The manner of service may change, but the heart of the servant need not. For these and many other meaningful memories, we say thank you.
Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor.
For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls.
As I close, knowing the impossible task of trying to write words that can adequately reflect our love for the Shaw’s, I pause to say thank you to them for one more example they have showed us all. Your commitment to one another over the years is nothing short of amazing. You have shown us what marriage looks like as it grows with the years and we are grateful for the beautiful picture you both have painted for us.
Thank You Lord for blessing us with the Shaw’s and we ask that You give them safe travel to their new home and church family. Continue to use them to Your glory and help us to continue Your work here at Biddeford as well, continuing the legacy which Brad and Brenda so humbly portrayed before us. Keep all of us in Your care until one day we unite again to fellowship together in Your presence. In Jesus wonderful name, Amen.
